After attending the Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School in Tamworth, John studied a Bachelor’s degree in History at University of Sydney (1991-1993).

He joined the Young Liberals and gained his political experience in the Liberal Party. He has been an advocate of democratic reform within the NSW Liberal Party since the mid-1990s. John has written opinion pieces about politics and history for The Australian, Sydney Morning Herald, The Spectator, Quadrant and many other media portals. He also occasionally appears on Sky News.

John Ruddick began work as a mortgage broker in 2001 and a year later opened the doors to John Ruddick Home Loans. Since then John has won several industry awards. He often sees clients after hours or on the weekends.

He has been active in and around the NSW Liberal Party for 25 years as a campaigner for democratic reform. John was a candidate for the federal presidency of the Liberals before resigning in 2015.

In 2018 he wrote Make the Liberal Party Great Again. The book advocates for the party membership to elect the parliamentary leader. In 2021, John joined the Liberal Democrats, first as the candidate for Warringah then as the lead Senate candidate for NSW.
